Becoming a Consultant

Becoming a Consultant

If you are someone with experience and knowledge in your field it can be fulfilling to pass that information on to someone else. Consulting is one way of doing this. By becoming a consultant you can help other people who are currently where you were at the beginning of your business journey. Or maybe they are not new but have encountered a difficult situation and need advice. Your expertise in this area is invaluable to them.

What Does a Consultant Do?

Consultants work with their clients to solve a variety of business concerns. For some people, they want guidance on starting a business. Other clients may be looking for help expanding their business or growing. Some clients want help with a particular aspect of their business, such as understanding billing more thoroughly, developing marketing strategies, or scaling. Consultants help with all of these things.

Benefits of Being a Consultant

Impact – As a consultant, you now have the ability to share your expertise and experience with another person and make a larger impact. Your knowledge and skills can be passed on to other people this way to enable them to be successful faster and help more people. It can be extremely rewarding to help them succeed knowing that you played a part in their growth.

Financial – While it is rewarding to help people it is also an extra perk to be able to add another stream of income to what you are currently doing. Consulting does not have to be full time and it can be just an extra source of revenue. You also get to decide how much to charge for your services based on your experience.

Work with different types of clients – While you may still be working within your field, no two clients will be the same or have the same needs. You will get to work with a variety of different people. This keeps you from feeling as if your work is getting stagnant.

Flexibility – Much like working in private practice, being a consultant can bring a lot of flexibility to your work schedule. You decide when you work and for how long, which can help provide better work life balance.

Cons

Less stability – You may not have a consistent stream of clients, especially at first. Marketing and networking are also an essential skills for this work. This can be scary if you want to do consulting full-time instead of another job. It is important to plan for this possibility.

You are the one responsible – Because you work on your own, you are the one responsible for everything. You have to be the one to do all of the scheduling and invoicing. And it is your responsibility to make sure you are keeping up with all of the current trends and updates within your field.
